Bisazza is one of the top luxury brands in the design sector and the industry’s leading producer of glass mosaic for interior and outdoor decoration. Established in 1956 in Alte Vicenza, Northern Italy, the company has become a trailblazer, marked by a dynamic entrepreneurial spirit, a mastery of modern technologies with an ability to read and anticipate the needs of the global market.

Bisazza worked with MINI/BMW to create the “MINI wears Bisazza”, project, which led to five personalised cars wearing custom made “dresses”. First showcased in 2005 at the Milan Design Week, the cars have been on tour ever since to the design and fashion hot spots of the world.

The quote above is from the Bisazza website.  Although BMW Press mentions only four Bisazza MINIs, Bisazza created five and there are five MINI wears BISAZZA postcards.  From the top, left to right:

  • Zebra
  • Pied de Poule [Houndstooth]
  • Summer Flowers
  • Tartan

Auto Express: MINI Countryman driven

MINI Countryman driven

The professionals at Auto Express test-drove the forthcoming MINI Cooper S Countryman and have published their impressions.

The supersized Countryman has well and truly busted the confines of its name – breaking with 50-years of tradition by adding four proper doors and a useful boot to a small concept that dates back to the 1960s…

Stretching past four-metres in length and offering four-wheel-drive, the big question is this…

Can it keep that essential MINI quality: driving fun?

The answer appears to be Yes.  They liked the lack of corner roll, acceleration, fuel efficiency, and improved interior.

collectible of the day: THE OPEN LETTER ad

THE OPEN LETTER ad
At the time of the launch of the MINI Convertible in the US in 2005, MINI USA created this ad.  THE OPEN LETTER ad was an open letter to people considering buying a Convertible to determine whether they are open people.

THE OPEN LETTER ad was found these magazine issues:

  • Men’s Journal. May 2005. (page 77)

The text of the ad reads:

THE OPEN LETTER

To Whom It May Concern,

Have you ever seen someone driving an open car with the top up? You kind of get the feeling they have something to hide. Like someone wearing a trench coat and sunglasses. Somehow, that thin piece of fabric is more of a barrier than the strongest steel.

If they were driving a car with a regular roof, you probably wouldn’t notice. But since they intentionally closed an open car, you can’t help but think they’re a closed person. After all, they’ve made a conscious decision to be closed when the opportunity to be open was right there. Open people would never do this.

Open people don’t care what their hair looks like. Open people don’t mind picking a few bugs out of their teeth. If they drive past an oil refinery, open people welcome the smell. If panhandlers approach them at a red light, open people never panic. Most motorcycle people are open people. They’ve just opted for two wheels instead of four. All kids are open people. This is why they try so hard to stuff their heads and arms out of the window. But most of them soon outgrow it.

In the old days, it was easy to tell open people from regular people. Open people drove around in goggles and leather caps. They took a lot of back roads. Whenever possible, they kept the accelerator mashed to the floor. When they stopped to gas up, the grimy outline of their eyewear made them look like racoons. Today it’s harder to spot an open person. But they’re still the exception and not the rule. Even here at MINI, most of us are regular roofers.

If you are considering a new car, the best thing you can do is be honest with yourself. Are you an open person? Please take some time to think about it. The fact is we didn’t make very many of these things. And with MSRP starting at $22,000,* they could easily end up in the wrong hands.

Always Open,
MINI

MINI E Race on the Nürburgring Nordschleife

MINI has once again put the MINI E Race, a race-modified version of the all-electric MINI E, on the track at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.  This is the second time for the MINI E Race; it became the first all-electric car to run the Nürburgring on April 12, 2010.  BMW PressClub on the first run:

Taking on the infamous Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit at race speed with an electrically powered car is an ambitious project, but the BMW Group has just become the first car manufacturer to make it happen. Today the MINI E Race, a modified race-spec version of the standard MINI E, completed a lap of the legendary 20.8 km “Green Hell” in a time of 09:51.45 minutes. The MINI E Race hit a top speed of 187 km/h.

MINI recently released the video from the first run:
