MC2 on the future of MINI styling

MC2 June/July 2012 cover
MC2 announced the next issue (June/July 2012) will have a fresh new look.

To go along with the new magazine design, Issue 38 contains a “multi-part series on the future of MINI styling, from the hatchback to the potential of the pickup, van and Moke.”  The cover shows a rendering which MC2 says is based on information they have:

It’s that MC2 has a few friends that know more about auto design than MINI news and info sites, and with the help of a world-renowned auto designer, stylist, and insider, we thought it was time to talk about MINI Futures. That designer is an old friend of ours, Mark Stehrenberger, a rarely-disputed source that is giving MC2 first crack at the coming facelift, Paceman, Moke, MINIvan, and pickup – and something that surprised even us – with his renditions of the future of our MINIs.

Visit the MC2 website to read more on the coming Issue 38.

Automobile: 2012 MINI John Cooper Works Coupe

2012 MINI John Cooper Works Coupe

Automobile magazine sent a writer to Austria to test and review the forthcoming 2012 MINI John Cooper Works Coupe (or Coupé as it is known as in Europe).

Does it drive like a Mini?

Yes, indeed. It’s based on the current Mini Cooper Cabriolet chassis and shares its powertrains with other Mini models. We drove only a top-of-the-line John Cooper Works version at the Wachauring racetrack in Melk, Austria, about an hour from Vienna. In late September, we will have the opportunity to drive the base Mini Cooper Coupe and the Mini Cooper Coupe S.

The author, Joe DeMatio, took the camoflagued pre-production MINI JCW Coupe around the Wachauring with rally legend Rauno Aaltonen riding alongside.

As I become more familiar with the track and the car, Aaltonen decreases the role of the electronic nannies. Before long I’m rotating through the sweepers smoothly, following Aaltonen’s advice to keep the revs way up on the turbo 1.6-liter four and to accelerate sooner rather than later out of corners.

Some important specifications taken from this article include:

  • The MINI Coupe weighs 55 lbs. more than the current MINI Hardtop
  • The MINI Coupe has a 13 degree flatter windscreen angle
  • The MINI Coupe is just over an inch lower than the MINI Hardtop
  • The MINI Coupe has 4.4 ft³ more cargo space (10.0 vs. 5.6) than the MINI Hardtop.

Auto Express: MINI takes it to the MAX in 2011

Auto Express: MINI city carA new article from Auto Express covers all of the new concepts and forthcoming models from MINI: MINI Paceman Concept, MINI Roadster Concept, MINI Beachcomber Concept, MINI Scooter E Concept, MINI Countryman Dakar entry, MINI Countryman WRC, MINI Coupé Concept, and MINI “Minor” (the city car).

Responding to new market demands, the current MINI hatch, Clubman and Countryman will be joined by two new production cars, three concepts which preview production certain models and an electric scooter!

What’s more, the firm makes its return to the WRC with a rally-prepared Countryman, and as you read this, MINI’s rally-raid car will be taking to the stages in South America on this year’s Dakar rally.

Auto Express: MINI Countryman driven

MINI Countryman driven

The professionals at Auto Express test-drove the forthcoming MINI Cooper S Countryman and have published their impressions.

The supersized Countryman has well and truly busted the confines of its name – breaking with 50-years of tradition by adding four proper doors and a useful boot to a small concept that dates back to the 1960s…

Stretching past four-metres in length and offering four-wheel-drive, the big question is this…

Can it keep that essential MINI quality: driving fun?

The answer appears to be Yes.  They liked the lack of corner roll, acceleration, fuel efficiency, and improved interior.

Auto Express: MINI Countryman vs Morris Mini Minor

MINI Countryman vs Morris Mini MinorShowing just how “un-Mini” the new MINI Countryman is, new photos from Auto Express say more than words.  Despite emphasizing the glaring size difference, the article makes a case for the MINI Countryman:

… BMW’s business model is impeccable. Expanding the range not only attracts new customers but lowers production costs at the same time. And that’s the key to the Countryman – it’s not targeting diehard MINI fans, but a whole new type of clientele.

Gone are the days when the MINI relied on its traditions and origins. The current family of BMW-designed models are examples of expert marketing, global lifestyle products that appeal to a wide range of buyers. The Countryman simply adds another string to its bow.
