MINI London 2012 special edition for the UK

MINI London 2012 special edition

To celebrate the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games, MINI has released the MINI London 2012 special edition.

There will be just 2,012 of these special edition models built, which are available in Cooper, Cooper D, Cooper S and Cooper SD trims and come in the Union Jack themed colours; Chilli Red, White Silver or Lightning Blue. All models boast white mirror caps and a white roof featuring the iconic London 2012 Olympic graphic.

The exterior also features a distinctive Union Jack single sport stripe which runs over the bonnet, roof and rear tailgate of the car. The side scuttles also bear the London 2012 Olympic graphic. To finish off the dynamic look, the MINI London 2012 edition features unique grey 17-inch conical spoke alloy wheels – unavailable on any other MINI model.

Inside, the most striking feature is the London skyline, beautifully etched across the width of the piano-black dashboard. Silhouetting some of London’s most iconic landmarks, including Tower Bridge, Battersea Power Station and the London Eye, the dashboard also displays the words “London 1 of 2012”.

RSR Motorsports finishes fourth in GRAND-AM ST team championship

RSR Motorsports No. 198 MINI

RSR Motorsports fell a little short in their attempt to capture the GRAND-AM Continental Sports Car Challenge team championship.  They had the pole in the No. 198 MINI and were just nine points out of first place going into the final race at Mid-Ohio.  But mechanical issues less than 30 minutes from the finish kept them from completing the win.

Cattaneo and co-driver Owen Trinkler entered the season finale just nine points out of the championship lead. Trinkler was poised to take the race win and the championship for RSR Motorsports, Cruise America and Thor Motor Coach before the shift cable broke with only 20 minutes left in the 2.5-hour race.

Still, the race wasn’t without its high notes. It was the first time Cattaneo has led the ST field. “I figured if I was out front, I could bring the car back in one piece. That was my motivation!” she says. “It was tough this year. Everything was a challenge, which only made us work that much harder to get to where we did. We always wanted to do better. Working with Owen this year made my driving improve so much. I can’t thank him enough.”

Trinkler and Cattaneo wound up fourth in the ST team championship. While he was still leading the race, Trinkler teamed up with Chris Puskar in the No. 195 RSR Motorsports MINI. “We were working together. He was pushing me down the back straight. It felt like we were at Daytona the way we ran together and could push past cars with more power,” Trinkler says.

See the official results from the GRAND-AM website.  The video shows highlights from the race.  The No. 196 MINI gets spun at 0:40.

MINI Canada team out of the Targa Newfoundland

MINI Canada Targa Newfoundland Team 2011

Jim Kenzie and MINI Canada Team Octane have withdrawn from the Targa Newfoundland on just the second day due to electrical problems.  Here’s the report from driver Jim Kenzie’s blog:

Targa Newfoundland 2011: it’s a big – 30 – for us…

I’m not sure where the expression ‘- 30 -‘ comes from, but it’s the traditional newspaper way of saying ‘this story is over.’

And when it comes to Targa Newfoundland 2011, our story is over.

We’re done.

Despite heroic efforts on the part of our crew, we just couldn’t solve the electronic gremlins that afflicted our little car.

Fellow competitor Andrew Comrie-Picard commented that this was the first time our team had ever had a ‘mechanical’ at Targa.

He’s right – in nine events, with three different MINIs, they’ve always been as reliable as a brick through a plate glass window.

Sure, we had a couple of flat tires in Year Two (2003), and I threw the car into the woods at 160 km/h in Year Seven (2008). But neither of them was the car’s fault.

The worst issue we ever had was one year – maybe Year Three, 2004? – when our tire pressure warning system was giving us ‘false negatives’ – saying we had low tire pressure when in fact we didn’t.

No biggie.

The Check Engine Light and intermittent non-starting issues this year presumably were symptoms of a deeper problem. And when the electronics decided we were ‘tampering’ with the system, it turned on the security lock-out function, and we couldn’t even do any further diagnostics on it.

We had access to another John Cooper Works Edition Cooper S for parts, but the security module from that car did not fit our car. The MINI Challenge car is a very special unit…

At least, that’s the best explanation for which I have the technical competence to deliver.

I’m sure when the car returns home and a full examination is done we’ll discover the problem. But in a parking lot in Gander Newfoundland in the rain at 3 a..m. – well, there’s only so much you can do.

Much thanks from me (second from the right) to our crew – from left to right, Alain Lauziere, Crew Chief; Brian Bourbonniere, co-driver; Kevin Abe, support/technician.

We’re off now to watch the Gander town stage which is always a hoot – to drive anyway.

The MINI always looked good through there, or so people always told me.

It’ll be bittersweet to watch others do it.

I’ll be flying home tomorrow, so this will be my last on-site blog posting, although I will be returning Saturday for the Gala Awards Banquet.

Won’t be taking any hardware home from this one, so I’ll show you again what we reaped last year…

The rally runs until September 17th and there are still a couple MINIs running in the Modern class.  You can follow each day’s results on the Targa Newfoundland Results webpage.
