BMW just published its global sales figures by model through Quarter 3 of 2014.

Model change impacts MINI sales volume


As expected, the MINI Hatch model change caused MINI brand sales to fall by 7.5 % to 207,529 units (2013: 224,280 units) during the period from January to September 2014. Nine-month sales of the MINI Countryman totalled 78,599 units (2013: 73,455 units; + 7.0 %). The MINI Hatch saw its sales volume figure dip to 83,508 units during this period (2013: 95,394 units; – 12.5 %). The third-quarter sales performance of 36,452 units clearly indicates an increasingly upward trend (2013: 32,436 units; + 12.4 %).

Revised Fuel Economy Figures for the MINI Hardtop

MINI F56 debut

After testing, the EPA has forced MINI to release revised fuel economy figures for the new MINI Hardtop (F56) for last year’s model.  From the EPA website:

During EPA fuel economy audit testing, the 2014 BMW Mini Cooper 3-Door was found to have values that differed from those submitted to EPA at the time of certification. Specifically, EPA conducted road-load audits of Mini vehicles produced by BMW in the 2014 model year. The Mini Cooper 3-door was found to have road-loads (i.e. aerodynamic drag, tire rolling resistance, and driveline friction) which exceeded EPA audit criteria when compared to the values originally reported by BMW at the time of certification. Both BMW and EPA performed emissions and fuel economy testing of the affected models using the road-loads determined in the production vehicle audit. While these vehicles were found to be in compliance with the emissions standards, the fuel economy label values were affected. The specific changes to fuel economy window stickers are listed in the table below.

2014 ADAC PROCAR season results

The German ADAC PROCAR Season finished last weekend with a pair of races at the Sachsenring. This is the series that replaced the MINI CHALLENGE series which ended last year. MINIs race in an exclusive Division 3 (also known as Division M) for MINI John Cooper Works. They can also compete in the new Division 1T which is exclusively for cars with 1.6 L turbocharged engines.

2014 ADAC PROCAR Division 3 StandingsThe 2014 Division 3 champion is Steve Kirsch in his MINI JCW No. 41. Kirsch won ten of the 16 races during the season and easily won the division. Second and third places were much closer with Kai Jordan taking 2nd by two points over the 3rd-place Thomas Tekaat.

Division 3 team results saw Frensch Power Motorsports take the championship. They were followed by H&R Team Dombek in 2nd place and Besaplast Team Dombek in 3rd.

In Division 1, MINI came in 2nd and 3rd place behind the champion Heiko Hammel in a Ford Fiesta ST. In 2nd was Reinhard Nehls and completing the podium was Franjo Kovac, both driving a MINI John Cooper Works. The only other MINI driver was Joachim Schirra who finished 7th, competing in only four of the 16 races.

Targa Newfoundland 2014 Results


The Canadian 2014 Targa Newfoundland rally took place from September 14-19, 2014. Sunday was the prologue, followed by five very tough legs around St. John’s, Newfoundland.

John Hume Sr. and Craig MacMullen won the Grand Touring, Equipped class in their 2006 MINI JCW GP. Another GP driven by/navigated by Cody Morch and Nicole Troster took 2nd place in the GT, Equipped class.

In the Modern class, the team of Mepham and Solecki just missed the podium at 4th place in their MINI Cooper S JCW.  The three cars ahead of them were a Subaru WRX STI, BMW M3, and a Scion FR-S, with a Lotus Exige behind them in 5th.

2014 MINI CHALLENGE UK results

The 2014 season of the MINI CHALLENGE UK wrapped up last weekend with three races at Brands Hatch GP.

In the JCW Class, the winner by a large margin was veteran Chris Knox in his MINI JCW No. 888.  Joining Knox on the podium are Neil Newstead in MINI No. 77 and Luke Caudle in the No. 2.  The leading rookie was Simon Quinn in the No. 55 JCW who finished 15th overall. The winner of the JCW Directors class was Alan Taylor.

In the Cooper Class, the 2014 champion is Shane Stoney in the MINI Cooper No. 1.  The Rookie champion was Matt Hammond who finished an impressive 5th overall.  Simon Walton won the Cooper Directors Class.  Grace Williams won the Ladies Cooper Class in her No. 11 MINI Cooper.

BMW just published its global sales figures by model for the first half of 2014.

From BMW Group Quarterly Report – Q2:

MINI sales volume influenced by model change
Due to the model change, sales of the MINI Hatch fell by 25.3 % to 47,056 units (2013: 62,958 units) in the first half of the year. The MINI Countryman achieved
sales volume of 53,363 units in the period under report (2013: 50,669 units; + 5.3 %).

worldwide MINI sales for July 2014



BMW Group had its best July sales ever and that includes MINI having its best July ever, as well. BMW is optimistic about the rest of 2014 despite the sale of 2015 MINI Hardtops being suspended until October in the US.

MINI sales figures are above last year’s level, making it the brand’s best July ever. A total of 24,259 vehicles were delivered to customers worldwide (prev. yr. 23,515 / +3.2%) and this positive trend is expected to continue in the second half of the year. Sales of the new third-generation MINI Hatch, the brand’s core model, are up 22.3% compared to the same month last year with a total of 11,970 delivered in July (prev. yr. 9,785). In the year-to-date, a total of 156,154 MINIs were sold (prev. yr. 172,314 / -9.4%).
