MINI Countryman wins Good Design Award 2010

MINI Countryman

From BMW Group PressClub Global:

The world’s oldest and most distinguished design award was called into being in Chicago in 1950 by the architects Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames and Edgar Kaufmann Jr., and is presented to this day by the Chicago Athenaeum and the European Centre for Architecture, Art Design and Urban Studies. For six decades now, this coveted prize is conferred on designers and manufacturers for particularly innovative and visionary products, concepts and ideas that reach beyond the bounds of ordinary product design. Not the least of its aims is to raise public awareness of contemporary design and related sustainability issues.

The selection of award winners is based on the criteria of function and aesthetic as originally laid down by Saarinen and Eames, and is complemented by an environmental stipulation for sustainable design, in keeping with the times. In 2010, an independent jury of design experts and architects made their selection from a record number of submissions from 37 different nations, and picked out more than 500 product and graphic designs to receive the GOOD DESIGN Award.

The MINI Countryman is the most expansive interpretation of the MINI design language. As the first MINI to feature four doors and measure more than four metres in length, the MINI Countryman’s typical MINI design leaves no doubt as to its kinship with the brand. Within the product family, the newcomer stands out with its striking exterior that features faintly pentagonal headlights, a new-style “helmet” roof and three-dimensional, vertically aligned rear lights. The interior design likewise accentuates the practicality and robust character of the MINI Countryman.

AUTOSPORT: interview with Prodrive Chairman David Richards

World Rally Championshipautosport.com posted an interview with Prodrive Chairman David Richards where he discusses the upcoming MINI Countryman WRC entries in the 2011 season of the World Rally Championship.  Two Prodrive drivers have already been announced, they are Kris Meeke and Dani Sordo.

The MINI Countryman WRC joins the Citroën DS3 WRC and Ford Fiesta RS WRC for the 2011 season.  Richard says “Volkswagen are about to announce their return to the World Rally Championship as well – and under the Volkswagen brand rather than Skoda” and may run a limited schedule of rallies like MINI will do.  The entries list for Rally Sweden, the first event of the season, has been published but MINI is not entered.

The entry of MINI by Prodrive is generating a lot of interest in MINI Countryman WRC sales.  Richard says:

“This is the first time I can remember for a long time that the private teams, private customers buying the Mini will have an identical car in every respect to the ones Dani and Kris are going to be driving.

“We’ve got cars going all over the world now. We’ve had orders from Brazil, Australia, the Middle East, the Far East, all across Europe, so you’ll see the Mini out there very quickly.”

BSSP: MINI Countryman NYC stunt

MINI Countryman NYC stunt

Butler, Stern, Shine & Partners created another installation to market the new MINI Countryman, this time a moving one.  Alluding to the marketing stunt from 2002 when Crispin Porter + Bogusky mounted MINIs on the tops of large SUVs, the current stunt has the new MINI Countryman as the SUV carrying a classic Mini on the roof.  From the BSSP website:

When MINI first launched in the US they mounted one on top of an SUV to show just how small it was. Well, with the launch of the all-new, four-wheel drive Countryman, MINI isn’t so mini anymore. So we simply couldn’t resist mounting a classic MINI on top of the Countryman, to show just how much we’ve grown. The copy on the side of the Countryman reads: “Holds everything you need for a fun weekend.”

X-raid Team 9th after stage 6 at The Dakar

Dakar 2011 Positions after stage 6

Today is day 7 of the Dakar Rally, a rest day in Arica, Chile.  After 6 stages, the X-raid Team #305 MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4 is in 9th place.  The French MINI ALL4 Racing drivers Guerlain Chicherit and Michel Périn are making a strong showing despite some minor setbacks:

From the Monster Energy X-raid Team News:

The French crew of Guerlain Chicherit and Michel Périn began the special 10th on the road with Périn sporting a hand injury sustained when the new Mini All4 Racing was attached to a towrope in the desert on Thursday.  Chicherit was running in eighth overall through PC1, up to seventh after PC2 and a fine sixth at PC3.  He eventually finished the stage in seventh place and moved up to ninth overall heading into Saturday’s rest day.

X-raid Team director Sven Quandt said:

“Guerlain drove very well in the Mini.  He was driving carefully and is now inside the top 10, which is great.  We now need to analyse the stages that we have left and where we could possibly get some time back.  We know from last year that this will not be easy, but there are some stages where we can make up some time.”
