RSR Motorsports on the podium at Lime Rock

RSR Motorsports MINI No. 198

RSR Motorsports again entered four MINIs in the race last weekend.  They competed in the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock and reached the podium in 2nd place with the MINI No. 195 driven by Matt Plumb and Dicky Riegel.

RSR Motorsports nearly had a 1-2 finish as the No. 198 MINI was leading with about 12 laps to go when it was stuck and spun by the No. 26 Mazda Miata.

podium finish for RSR Motorsports at Homestead-Miami

RSR Motorsports' Sarah Cattaneo and Owen Trinkler

The RSR Motorsports No. 198 MINI Cooper S placed 3rd this afternoon in the Kia 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, their first podium finish of the season.  Sarah Cattaneo and Owen Trinkler picked up 55 points.  Sarah is quoted on the GRAND-AM website about their race:

“I connect really well with Homestead-Miami Speedway. Last year I had the pole. Today I started from the back and moved up halfway through the field before Owen (Trinkler) took over and finished third. Our car couldn’t have been more perfect.”

Ron Farmer and Jason Hart placed 16th in the No. 196 MINI Cooper S followed by VJ Mirzayan and Chris Sarian at 18th in their No. 195 MINI.

The race will be broadcast on SPEED on March 19 at 2:00pm.

RSR Motorsports Homestead-Miami preview

RSR Motorsports MINIs

Next up for RSR Motorsports is the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The team claimed sixth and seventh in the ST class during the season opener at Daytona, a track that is traditionally tough for the MINIs, which carry sponsorship from Cruise America, Thor Motor Coach, and US LED. Now, heading to the second speedway track in a row, RSR Motorsports’ drivers are feeling optimistic, but know that Homestead will present its own challenges.

“Last year I got an incredible tow during qualifying,” says Sarah Cattaneo. The Global Jet-sponsored driver earned her first series pole at Homestead in 2010. “Homestead is a track where we need perfect execution. We have to be quick through traffic, qualify well, and get those tows on the banking whenever we can.”

The Kia 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway begins on Saturday, March 5, at 4:15pm. The race will be broadcast on SPEED on March 19 at 2:00pm.

RSR Motorsports: Daytona recap

Sarah Cattaneo and Owen Trinkler
We have previously reported on RSR Motorsports at the GRAND-AM 200 and brought you photos.  Here is the recap from RSR Motorsports:

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The word “challenging” was heard often in the RSR Motorsports camp as the MINI Cooper S team prepared for the season opener at Daytona International Speedway. Never ones to back down, the team rose to the challenge by earning sixth and seventh in the ST class of Friday’s GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race.

Carrying all-new graphics and sponsorship from Cruise America, Thor Motor Coach and US LED, the RSR Motorsports MINI Cooper S entries proved that small can still be mighty, even on the high banks of Daytona.

“Our cars were two seconds off the fastest ST car’s pace,” notes team owner Randall Smalley. “That’s a reflection of the high banks, and Daytona is the toughest track for us all season. Thanks to a great race strategy and flawless pit stops, we were competitive the whole race. I’m thrilled.”

Owen Trinkler and Sarah Cattaneo earned the sixth-place finish in the No. 198 RSR Motorsports MINI Cooper S. They were a formidable duo during last year’s season finale at Miller Motorsports Park, but even they were surprised with their finish.

“I didn’t expect to do so well; we had just been hoping for a top ten,” says Cattaneo. “We’re looking forward to Homestead in March. I had the pole there last year, so coupled with our sixth at Daytona, it’s a real confidence booster.”

“It felt good to finish,” enthused Trinkler, whose past four appearances at Daytona have ended in retirement. “We got valuable points and got what we needed to get this season started right.”

Trinkler also competed in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, co-driving the No. 63 Team Spencer Mazda RX-8 with Jim Downing, David Murry, Dennis Spencer and Rich Grupp. Despite some early setbacks, the team crossed the finish line 18th in the GT class.

Ron Farmer and Jason Hart made an impressive RSR Motorsports debut, finishing Friday’s 2.5-hour race with the seventh spot in ST. Farmer qualified the No. 196 RSR Motorsports US LED MINI Cooper S and drove the first stint.

“We certainly didn’t have the goal of a top-ten finish, being at Daytona in a MINI, and facing a lot of firsts. It was my first qualifying and our first race in the car,” says Farmer. “To qualify sixth and finish seventh felt great.”

“This gives us a big boost. We’re still rookies, and we know we still have a lot to learn, but this has raised our expectations,” says Hart. “Ron had an outstanding qualifying, using the draft to his advantage, and the crew had flawless pit stops during the race.”

After a solid start for Chris Sarian in the No. 195 RSR Motorsports MINI Cooper S, he and co-driver VJ Mirzayan had to retire with an alternator problem at the halfway point of the race.

RSR Motorsports at the GRAND-AM 200

RSR Motorsports No. 195 MINI

The 2011 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season began today with the GRAND-AM 200 at Daytona. RSR Motorsports qualified and started three MINIs. It was a perfect day for racing and the Library of Motoring was there. The Daytona International Speedway track was crowded with 78 cars in two classes: GS and ST. The best position for RSR Motorsports was their start in 4th by the No. 196 MINI driven by team newcomer Ron Farmer. Farmer and co-driver Jason Hart ran a consistent race near the front. The No. 198 MINI driven by Sarah Cattaneo and then Owen Trinkler seemed to struggle some in the early stages but steadily worked their way through the pack. Retiring after 24 laps was the No. 195 MINI of VJ Mirzayan and Chris Sarian. The ST class was won by the No. 171 Volkswagen GTI of APR Motorsport but RSR Motorsports had two top-ten finishers.

We spoke to Ron Farmer after the race. He comes to RSR Motorsports after several years of racing Corvettes and is adjusting to the front-wheel drive and short wheelbase of the MINI. The MINI doesn’t have the best aerodynamics and he said he could feel the effects of the draft at 148 mph on the straightway. His No. 196 MINI sustained some front bumper damage and lost some black trim pieces when he was clipped by a passing GS-class Porsche. Ron was very enthusiastic about the MINI’s performance and is looking forward to some of the tighter courses in the series. Thanks Ron for taking the time to chat with us.

Unofficial results for RSR motorsports:

6. 198 Cattaneo / Trinkler
7. 196 Farmer / Hart
33. 195 Mirzayan / Sarian

The No. 195 and No. 196 MINI Cooper S cars have been completely rebuilt and the No. 198 MINI is new.

ORLANDO, Fla.—With more than twenty test days completed, RSR Motorsports is ready to see a green flag during this weekend’s GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season opener at Daytona International Speedway. The trio of MINI Cooper S race cars—sponsored by Cruise America, Thor Motor Coach and US LED—will take on the ST class in hopes of picking up right where they left off last year.

Sarah Cattaneo and Owen Trinkler, driving the new No. 198 RSR Motorsports MINI, are encouraged after Test Days at Daytona just a few weeks ago. “The new car ran really well and we’re just ready to go race,” says Trinkler. “Our goal is to leave Daytona with a top-five finish. Another top five at Homestead will set us up well heading into Barber.”
