BMW Group just announced that Thomas Felbermair, VP MINI Europe, will take over the role of Vice President, MINI Region Americas currently held by David Duncan.  Duncan will move on to BMW Group.

From BMW Group PressClub USA:

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – April 14, 2016… BMW of North America, LLC (BMW NA) today announced new appointments within its senior management team. David Duncan will transition to a BMW Group position as the Head of Corporate and Special Sales for the company while Thomas Felbermair will join as Vice President, MINI Region Americas, Duncan’s former role. These appointments take effect May 1, 2016.

In his new role as Department Head, Corporate and Special Sales, Duncan will lead the team responsible for European Delivery, Corporate Fleet Sales, Executive Allowance Sales and Daily Rental Account Sales. The position is a BMW Group function supporting multiple brands within the company portfolio including BMW, MINI and BMW Motorcyles. He will collaborate closely with the sales department, regional offices, field teams, and the dealers to continue volume development of corporate and special sales accounts.

An 18-year employee of the BMW Group, Duncan has extensive business experience in various leadership positions within the organization. He joined the company as an area manager for BMW Motorcycles on the West Coast in 1998. Three years later he moved over to the MINI brand where he established the original U.S. dealer network prior to the 2002 re-launch of the brand in the market. Duncan then transferred over to the BMW brand in 2004 as Center Development Manager in the eastern region before being promoted to Regional Sales and Marketing Manager in 2006. He rejoined MINI in 2009 first as Department Manager of Product Strategy, later assuming responsibility for MINI Sales and Aftersales in 2010, and finally leading the MINI organization since 2014.

Thomas Felbermair replaces Duncan as the Vice President, MINI Region Americas. Felbermair will focus on driving sales, service, customer and dealer satisfaction, overseeing the business operations for the brand in the Americas region. He most recently held a similar postion in Germany as Vice President for MINI in the European region.

Felbermair’s automotive career spans more than two decades across multiple aspects of the business from sales and product launches to sports marketing and sponsorships. While much of his background is rooted in sales, Felbermair spent a significant portion of his years in the industry supporting the Porsche Michelin Supercup. He began his career at Audi and then transited to Porsche where he focused on Formula 1 motorsports events, marketing, dealer development and product management. Felbermair later returned to Audi to become the Head of Sales for the brand in Germany where he increased market share to a record 8.6%.  He then moved over to Lamborghini to take on the challenge of running their sales and marketing division before joining the MINI brand in 2015.

“Our business is all about our customers and improving their experience through all aspects of the customer journey,” said Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “These changes will strengthen our business and I congratulate David Duncan on his new role in the burgeoning area of corporate and special sales and we welcome Thomas Felbermair as the new leader of MINI. I know they both will do well.”

The MINI “Defy Labels” Ad Campaign

MINI Defy Labels Campaign

MINI officially announced their Super Bowl ad which has already been given a sneak peek online.

An interesting note: there are actually two slightly different versions of the ad.  In version 1, Harvey Keitel says, “This car doesn’t care what you call it.”  In version 2, which MINI USA posted to Twitter, Keitel says, “This is a car that doesn’t give a damn what you call it.”

Version 2:

MINI USA also released a behind-the-scenes video.

From BMW Group PressClub Global:

Woodcliff Lake, NJ. As more than 100 million viewers around the world prepare to tune into the Super Bowl on February 7, MINI is unveiling its star-studded 30-second spot, set to air in the third quarter of the year’s biggest night in television advertising. The ad is already available on the campaign’s microsite at MINIUSA.com/defylabels.

The ad, created by Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners (BSSP), embraces many of the labels the brand has experienced over the years with a very powerful message: it doesn’t care what you call it. “Defy Labels,” has its roots in the fact that everyone and everything is labeled but how you handle those labels is what matters. With defiance at its core, the campaign inspires people to shed the labels society has placed upon them and instead define themselves.

“Ever since the first Mini was built in 1959, it has been labeled as one thing or another. It’s small. It’s cute,” said Tom Noble, department head, MINI Brand Communications, MINI USA. “This campaign acknowledges those labels in a very authentic way while simultaneously showing people MINI is more than that. With the launch of the new Clubman, our brand is growing up, our products are more sophisticated, and its time to reset the conversation.”

The brand worked with an ensemble cast of athletes and celebrities to help start that conversation. Staying true to the nature of the campaign, MINI wanted to include personalities that had a relationship to the brand and could also speak authentically about the topic of overcoming labels. The spot includes tennis player Serena Williams, soccer player Abby Wambach, rapper T-Pain, baseball player Randy Johnson, skateboard legend Tony Hawk, and actor Harvey Keitel. Each also filmed a series of long-form interviews sharing their own perspectives about labels that are available on the campaign microsite at MINIUSA.com/defylabels.

In addition to the celebrities and athletes listed above, the “Defy Labels” advertisement will feature non-celebrity MINI owners and members of the MINI John Cooper Works racing team, who also choose to be a bit different and break convention.

“This powerful concept leverages the brand’s new sophisticated positioning, with a little bit of the MINI attitude that’s always been there,” said John Butler, chief creative officer, BSSP. “It goes beyond a typical celebrity endorsement. This creative is all about not letting others define you, or for that matter, what you choose to drive. It’s about never giving others that power over you.”

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – September 25, 2015… MINI USA announced pricing today on its all-new 2016 MINI Clubman with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $24,100 for the Cooper model. The most spacious and versatile MINI every built, the new MINI Clubman is the first MINI to enter the compact premium segment. It is both longer and wider than previous MINI models and offers premium quality and craftsmanship in every detail for under $25,000. The Cooper S variant will start at $27,650.  All prices exclude the $850 Destination & Handling fee.

“The premium quality and value of the new MINI Clubman will set the standard for the premium compact segment going forward,” said Patrick McKenna, Department Head, Product Planning & Events, MINI USA. “MINI defined the premium small car segment with the relaunch of the Hardtop back in 2002 and the new Clubman will help us redefine the notion of “premium” with nearly bespoke levels of customization.”

Like every MINI model in the product line up, all options are available a la carte, as well as in bundled packages. This means customers can decide to pay for only what they select and are not forced into more expensive packages that include equipment they don’t want or need. This testing was conducted to ensure that the new MINI Clubman maintained the legendary “fun to drive” handling that enthusiasts expect on the road.

MINI returns to Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge series

2015 MINI John Cooper Works HardtopAfter a few years’ absence from the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge series (formerly GRAND-AM) when RSR Motorsports stopped racing MINIs, MINI USA announced that MINI is returning to compete once again in the Series’ ST class.

LAP Motorsports in partnership with MINI USA, will enter the forthcoming MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop later in the season.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ, January 12, 2015. The new 2015 MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop will make its World Premiere today at the North American International Auto Show, featuring the most powerful engine ever installed in a MINI production model. The latest high performance addition to the MINI line up will be priced at $30,600 plus $850 Destination & Handling in the U.S. and will go on sale in the spring.

The 2015 MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop will make its much-anticipated World Premiere with a grand introduction by none other than rally legend Rauno Aaltonen at MINI’s press conference in Hall D of the COBO Center, at 1:20 pm ET. Aaltonen will take the stage in a Classic Mini similar to the 1966 Mini Cooper S that he drove to victory in the famed Monte Carlo Rally in 1967.

With Aaltonen on hand and the new MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop in the spotlight, MINI proudly announced a new motorsports partnership with LAP Motorsports to compete in the Street Tuner (ST) class of the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge. The Indianapolis-based team owned and operated by racing veteran Luis Perocarpi will begin running the MINI John Cooper Works cars in the series later this year.

MINI’s long history of rally-car racing has always been reflected in the brand’s John Cooper Works performance series, and the newest Hardtop further extends that tradition. The latest edition in the premium line, the 2015 MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop offers the most powerful engine ever installed in the brand’s production models, delivering optimal performance to the premium small-car segment.

“This is undoubtedly an exciting time at MINI as we relaunch the John Cooper Works sub-brand as a true model in itself and with the most powerful engine we’ve ever had in a production model MINI,” said David Duncan, Vice President MINI of the Americas. “The new MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop will be an important part of our business moving forward, offering customers a premium high performance vehicle in a small package.”

Specially tuned for high performance on the track and on the road, the first John Cooper Works model to be built on the shared front wheel drive global architecture with BMW Group will be powered by the latest generation MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology four-cylinder engine. The car also features a sports exhaust, refined suspension technology and model-specific design features which not only optimize the car’s aerodynamic features, but also guarantee a fun and efficient ride with an irresistible temperament.
