collectibles: MINI USA owner loyalty gift speakers

MINI speakers (front) MINI speakers (back)

Recently some MINI owners in the US have been receiving surprise packages in the mail.  It’s unclear why some are receiving these, but the common thread seems to be owners who purchased a 2012 MINI (so far).

The foldable plastic speakers are approximately 3″ on each side with wires and a jack.

The letter on the included card reads:

Dear MINI Motorer:

Do you know how much we appreciate your loyalty? (No? We can hum a few bars…) Seriously, in the time you’ve been Motoring, we hope it has inspired you at least once to break out into song. After all, MINI and music have made a perfect match since 1959 and into the Swinging Sixties, when top British pop icons declared their affection for their fave small ride.

Anyway, to celebrate your own Motoring musical heritage, we wanted to give you a gift that’s music to your gears: speakers to take anywhere. They’re flat, they’re fabulous, and they open to deliver the best sounds in the world: yours.

Let’s Motor.

MINI USA sales by model from 2002 to 2013

MINI lineup 2013

Yesterday we posted MINI USA sales from 2002 to 2013.  Today we break the sales figures down by MINI model (body style) since the launch in 2002.

The only MINI model available every year since launch is the Hardtop, so naturally it makes up the majority of sales, about 66%.  MINI Convertible sales have fluctuated wildly from year-to-year.  The MINI Clubman had its best year in its very first year and has declined ever since, the later years probably due to the arrival of the Countryman (and Paceman).  The MINI Coupe and Roadster are niche vehicles and sales have reflected that.

MINI USA passed the half-million total sales figure in 2013 and should pass 600,000 in 2014.

 MINI Cooper 2001-2013

Now that MINI USA has released its sales figures for 2013, let’s look at the yearly sales since the launch in 2002.

MINI USA had its best sales figures ever in 2013, just barely beating the previous year’s record sales by less than 1%.  Annual sales in the US have risen steadily since launch with only two years having declines in sales: -4.0% in 2006 (the last year of the first generation) and -16.4% more recently in 2009 due mainly to the poor economy.  Sales have increased for the past four years as the economy has improved and MINI has launched more models.  The MINI Countryman sales figures have been strong, but it’s unclear how many sales of other models it cannibalized, especially those of the MINI Clubman.  With the model changeover, the production delay of the third-generation Hardtop, and the lack of a MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop in the lineup, MINI USA will be hard-pressed to top its 2013 sales figures.

In the twelve model years since the MINI USA launch on March 22, 2002, MINI has sold 553,750 vehicles.

calendar year USA deliveries change from previous year launch to date

MINI USA Owners’ Network ending “for now”

MINI USA Owners' Network ending

MINI USA posted the following note announcing the end of the MINI USA Owners’ Network as we have known it:

The Owners’ Network had a fantastic run, but is long overdue for a serious tune-up. So, on January 1st, the sun is setting on the Owners’ Network. However, the passion for motoring you all helped inspire is already thriving in other MINI communities. So if you’re not already a part of them, bring your enthusiasm for motoring and all things MINI to our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube pages. There’s a lot going on there and we want you to be a part of it.

As far as the Owners’ Network goes, don’t fret: we’ve got something new coming in 2014. But until then, be sure to download and cherish any memories you’ve made on the Owners’ Network. Then, head on over to the communities below to rally the motoring troops, make new memories, and share your expertise as some of the most grizzled and veteran Motorers out there.

Visit the MINI USA Owners’ Network and save any information you’d like to keep.

MINI Gift Swap

MINI USA is trying something unique for the holidays, they are hosting a MINI Gift Swap exclusively for MINI owners.

They say it’s better to give than receive, but both are kinds nice. As are surprises. That’s why we’ve organized the MINI Gift Swap. Every MINI owner who signs up will get the name & address of another MINI owner (at random), and it’s up to you to surprise them with a gift! We’re not the present-police, so there’s no guarantee you’ll get a gift in return, but because only MINI owners can participate, we hope everyone will share the joy of giving – and receiving.

Sign up for the MINI Gift Swap.

MINI USA website redesigned

MINI USA website redesign 2013

MINI USA launched a complete redesign of its website.

From BMW Group PressClub USA:

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – November 8, 2013…Whether you’re shopping for a new MINI, customizing your future MINI or looking to share your motoring experiences with other MINI owners, the new redesigned MINIUSA.com web site is the place for you! The first redesign of the site in more than five years promises to deliver an easy to use, interactive experience for both current and future MINI owners.

The site, which sees an average of 900,000 visits per month, was redesigned on a new platform to not only increase operational efficiency but also to serve as the digital hub for all things MINI in the United States. It’s also fully responsive, ensuring design, content and functionality are optimized regardless of whether the user is visiting from a desktop, tablet or smartphone.

In the press release, MINI USA also gave some interesting figures:

The optimized configurator is an important enhancement to the site given the fact that today more than 30 percent of MINI’s seven models are built to order by enthusiastic owners who are willing to wait close to six weeks for delivery.  In fact, MINIUSA.com generates more than 6,000 saved configurations per month, and of those that become leads, 39% result in a sale.
